Research focus: Salinity tolerance in Chenopodium quinoa
In the face of climate change, marginal cropping environments are on the rise and it is important to identify and breed crop cultivars suitable for these environments. Chenopodium quinoa is a drought and salt tolerant crop, which provides highly nutritious seeds. It therefore is a candidate to sustainably diversify cropping systems in marginal environments, especially on saline soil.
In my PhD, I aim to identify salt tolerant quinoa accessions and improve the efficiency of phenotyping approaches for salinity tolerance in quinoa. Furthermore, I work to unravel the underlying mechanisms of salinity tolerance and investigate how to apply the knowledge to plant breeding.
